Normally fishing is something that we do to relax and unwind but if you are stressed about looking for work it might be the last thing you want to do. However this kind of FISH!ing is different.
If you are seeking new employment or aiming to land a new promotion I would love to share how four simple principles could help you stand out from other job candidates or fellow team mates.
You might think this sounds Fishy but stay with me. I'll keep it short and sweet. This concept originated from a Fish market in Seattle and has been around for 20 years. In fact these fishmongers became World Famous for the way they were being while at work. They sold the same fish that all the other fish markets sold and they even sold it for the same price. But why did these particular fishmongers get interviewed on TV, star in movies and be filmed for music videos?
They decided that together they were going to Be World Famous. So they set their goal and then they proceeded to actually do it.
Selling fish is not typically a fun job. It is hard work and not sure if you have been to Seattle but it is cold and wet and the fishmongers had to work 12-14 hour shifts.
Taking all this into consideration they started to really enjoy their work and it showed. Each fishmonger made a personal commitment to the four principles and they practised them daily. People started to visit the store just to watch the Fishmongers work and have fun!
These principles or practices as we now call them are; Be There, Choose Your Attitude, Make Their Day and Play.
I have been working with HR and People & Culture Managers for close to a decade and they consistently tell me that they hire based on attitude.
Now of course skill and experience is important but if you are competing against other job candidates that have the same qualifications or experience how to you plan to stand out?
This is where FISH! can really help. When your interviewer asks you to share something about yourself that is a stand out quality you can go right to your fishing tackle box and pull out your FISH! wisdom and say something like, "I understand that I can consciously Choose My Attitude and am aware of what impact a wrong attitude can have on people or a situation, therefore I choose a positive attitude moment by moment." Or if you are interviewing for a role with strong focus on Customer Service you can discuss how your enjoy Making Peoples Days by doing simple things like greeting with a smile and being helpful.
I am confident that you will definitely get a smile from your interviewer if you say either of the above with sincerity, and there is so much more you can do with FISH!
However it is not just about memorising a few phrases. I would highly recommend that you take time to prepare and being fully Fish-ified!
We can help with a short 45 minute online course. During this course you can create your own action plan on how you plan to practise these four principles and bring them to your new place of employment. You can then bring this action plan into the interview with you or email ahead of time with your application to show how committed you are to making a difference at their organisation.
Since this course is new I can almost guarantee that no other candidates would have this advantage. Here is the link if you want to dive in
